Creating Creative Math Classes

So many of the most challenging teaching questions are answered by classes where students create. Creativity is one of the most primal and essential human activities and it is frequently absent from math classes. We will discuss the questions, habits, and lessons that can nurture it.

Teaching with a Mindset Mathematics Approach

Recent years have seen an explosion of scientific evidence showing that there is a different way to teach and learn mathematics. When people take a “mindset mathematics” approach in all grades, different pathways open up, leading to higher, and more equitable achievement. A mindset mathematics approach involves teaching math(s) as a conceptual subject, highlighting the connections between ideas, giving students mindset messages as they learn, sharing maths as a visual subject. In this presentation we will look together at different mathematical ideas and consider how they can be learned through a mindset mathematics approach.

In this interactive session, we’ll explore how number sense—understanding relationships, decomposing, and composing numbers, and reasoning flexibly—creates a natural pathway to algebra. Through rich, hands-on tasks and activities, we will explore patterns, properties, and visual models to help students move from arithmetic strategies to algebraic generalizations. We’ll discuss student reasoning, connect multiple representations, and instructional moves that make algebra accessible, meaningful, and powerful for all learners.

If our youngest learners experience a math culture of curiosity and wonder, it lays the solid foundation needed for them to develop into competent problem-solvers and prepares them to face all future math challenges with confidence. When we provide the right inspiration, we help students make connections between mathematics and the world around them and to engage in rich mathematical conversations. Imagine a world where students are engaged from the start of math class every day. Students make connections across mathematical ideas and with one another. They experience true collaboration and develop collective agency, supporting each other through productive struggle. Most importantly, students recognize mathematics as something more than classroom math and know they are more than capable of engaging with math content successfully.

Productive Struggle, Not Panic: Questioning Strategies That Keep Students in the Task

There is a thin line between a student shutting down because they do not understand a task and a student who feels sufficiently challenged to persevere. That space in between is uncomfortable. For the student and for the teacher. But it is also where learning begins. As teachers, how do we facilitate learning in that space? In this session, we will dig into that question together. Through scenario-based activities, role-play, and honest reflection, we will explore what productive struggle actually looks like across grade levels and how to distinguish it from panic in real time. We will practice the questioning moves that keep students inside the problem rather than pulling them out of it, and talk honestly about the teacher’s instincts that sometimes work against us. You will leave with concrete questioning strategies you can bring back to your classroom and a clearer sense of what it really means to support a student without rescuing them.

From offering real choice and normalizing uncertainty to designing better tasks and listening deeply to student ideas, we’ll reflect on ways to center curiosity in our daily practice. This is a chance to pause and reimagine what’s possible when math class becomes a place of wonder.

Proactive Priming: Reimagine Readiness, Rethink Reteaching, and Removing Roadblocks

Do you ever feel like there are too many students at the back table waiting for remediation? Caught in perpetual cycle of reteaching? This workshop explores how to intentionally build mathematical readiness so every student can equally engage in grade-level instruction to the depth of the benchmarks. Participants will examine how to identify and strengthen prerequisite concepts and skills that support reasoning, problem-solving, and conceptual understanding. Rather than remediating after gaps appear, teachers will learn how to proactively design structures that prepare students to access and make sense of mathematics, fostering confidence and productive engagement from the start of a unit.

Inspiration from the Source: Creating Space to Let Them Speak

As students progress from one grade to the next, they become increasingly reluctant to share their mathematical thinking. Why is that? What are we doing or not doing in the math classroom that perpetuates this lack of interaction? What conditions must exist to uplift and deeply value what our students can contribute to our math classrooms? This session will focus on the vital role of student engagement in the math classroom and introduce BR.I.D.G.E. Framework as a tool to elevate student voice. It will highlight recent Math Narrative Project research that focuses on prioritizing relationships and reassessing assumptions, two critical instructional perspectives that can generate a sense of safety necessary for students to communicate and collaborate. The session will analyze how intentional instructional decisions can cultivate student agency and a positive math identity. Participants will gain actional mathematical discourse strategies intended to improve their instructional practices. They will also leave with poignant voices of math students resonating in their minds as reminders to let their students speak.

From Numbers to Narratives: Fostering Creativity Through Data Visualization

Is there room for creativity in math classrooms? This session explores how data visualization can foster creativity in mathematics classrooms. While math is often seen as procedural, data visualization invites students to interpret, represent, and communicate data they’ve collected in creative ways. Drawing on classroom examples, participants will examine how students can move beyond standard graphs to design visualizations that tell meaningful stories with data. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for integrating data visualization to support creative expression and expand what counts as doing mathematics.
